This winter the North has been blessed with such incredible amounts of snow and cold. Cold = Winter = Hockey for Canadians. As a side note, Tom just recently treated me to my first NHL game – Leafs vs Lightning – so cool. So anyway I thought it was the appropriate season to retell this small story.
This incident took place in the biggest little town in Canada. Tom was so young when this all happened he forgets some of the details that I could embellish this tale with. But it is worth telling even without some of the facts.
Walleye Glena was the butcher for the Hudson Bay Company in Hudson Ontario and a friendly, helpful citizen. Still is! His generosity even extended to the village canine squad.
One morning a group of young, soon to be NHL stars were shovelling off the local outdoor rink in preparation for a game of shinny. They had got some of the snow worked up into some decent sized piles.
Well, along comes Walleye with his brand new snow blower. So Proud. The first one ever in Hudson. All the boys marvelled from the sidelines at the man and his new machine. The rink was getting cleared fast.
Then…the blower vibrated and ground to a halt. The butcher discovered a very large knuckle bone had significantly bent the auger blades. No doubt one of his own special treats to a neighbourhood dog. He used to throw them out the back door of the shop.
Boy was he mad! Tom and the rest of the hockey gang watched in awe. Mr Glena once again hurled that bone. All the way over the end boards of the rink. There it landed, with a crash. Right thru the windshield of HIS car.
Many gaffaws had to be stifled into mittens that morning. Poor helpful Walleye Glena, we just had to laugh.
I changed the butcher’s name ever so slightly to save him this small embarrassment and to add a few keywords.
